Progressive Waltham Candidate Questionnaire

As I ramp up to the Sept 17th preliminary election and hopefully the Nov 5th general, I am asked to answer questionnaires to show where we stand on issues and where opinions lie. Progressive Waltham sent each candidate a questionnaire and I thank them for posting this publicly and for the exposure to share my ideas. Here's mine:

First reading of WHS budget/loan approval

The City Council, at the August 5 special summer session, approved the first reading of the loan order to fund construction of Waltham High School at 554 Lexington Street. Bill attended and noted a significant amount of people in Ward 2 both for and against. The needs and concerns of abutters and neighbors will require a lot of attention from the next Ward 2 Councillor, and Bill is best suited for that role.

Meet the Candidate/School Supply Drive

Thank you to everyone who came out Saturday, August 24th for our Meet the Candidate and School Supply Donation night. We collected enough supplies to make donations to Waltham High, Kennedy Middle, MacArthur and Plympton. Waltham's generosity never disappoints.

Community Meeting for WHS @ 554 Lexington St

There was a productive meeting held in the Waltham High School Robinson Auditorium on July 17. Many abutters, neighbors, and concerned citizens asked thoughtful questions and had real-life concerns. More to come on this project. Some highlights of note:

  • The property will NOT be clear-cut and there will be no taking of any residential property
  • Questions were asked about traffic patterns, blasting insurance (City will provide this), what kind of fencing would be installed and about the 30-40 foot barrier to abutters, about what trees would remain, flooding, rodent control and the blasting schedule.
  • Several residents asked about the duration of the project and where construction vehicles would park

Watching Waltham hit the road and recorded episode 5 at the Waltham Public Library. We welcomed Kaytie Dowcett, Executive Director of the Waltham Partnership for Youth (WPY). We also interviewed two WPY all-stars, Lissett and Jeffrey, who shared their experiences, struggles, and successes about growing up in Waltham and in Waltham Schools. Mike was coaching baseball and Shawn was coaching lacrosse, so they'll be back next episode. Thanks Kaytie, Licette and Jeffrey (and their parents and families for letting them be interviewed) and thanks for listening!
